Today, we are honored to share with you our reflections on an autobiographical novel — Educated.

This book tells the true story of Tara Westover, a woman whose life was profoundly shaped by her unusual family. One of the most striking aspects of the book is how vividly Tara portrays each character, revealing her deep ambivalence toward them. Her father, an extreme Mormon, had a strong desire for control and was deeply hostile to the government. Even more heartbreaking, her mother — an obedient midwife — never fully recovered from a terrible accident, both physically and mentally.

Growing up under their influence, Tara’s childhood was far from ordinary. Her family was like a fortress built from paranoia. Her father raised high walls with predictions of doomsday and locked the gates with chains of government conspiracy. Inside this fortress, wounds were to be healed with essential oils — because medicine would rot the body; knowledge was the whisper of the devil, meant to corrupt the soul. Ridiculous and absurd — yet this was the so-called faith of Tara’s parents. Living in such a family, Tara was torn by contradictions. The fractured love from her family left deep scars on her heart: her father would stay up all night worrying about her safety, yet refuse to take her to the hospital because of his beliefs; her brother Shawn would secretly slip her $100 when she couldn’t afford rent, only to shove her head into the toilet the next moment. This tangled mix of love and hate was like an inescapable web, making Tara desperate to flee, yet unable to let go.

Just when she was deeply trapped in despair and on the verge of giving up, a precious ray of light suddenly appeared in her life — her brother Tyler. Having left home to pursue college and embraced a completely new life outside, he understood how precious knowledge and education truly were. He knew how suffocating their family’s rigid beliefs could be, and he firmly believed that Tara deserved a much better future beyond the mountains. He encouraged her to step out of her confined world, bravely pursue higher education, trust herself, and chase a life of her own choosing. His sincere words touched her soul, opened up a brand-new world for her, and planted an unshakable faith deep in her heart. With unwavering determination, Tara spared no effort studying day and night, overcoming huge gaps in basic knowledge and endless family pressure. Eventually, she was admitted to BYU, and later earned precious opportunities to study at world-renowned Cambridge and Harvard, completely rewriting her destiny.

Tara’s journey is not just a personal story — it is a powerful lesson for all of us. As the book conveys: "The most powerful determinant of who you are is inside you." The past is a ghost, insubstantial and unaffecting. Only the future has weight. We have all struggled under the expectations of others, defined success by worldly standards, and gradually blurred our own dreams under that weight. But this book tells us: growth is not about catering to others — it is about having the courage to write our own chapter.

You shall fly to your mountain like a bird. And that mountain is not a physical place — it is the faith and direction in your heart. You could call this selfhood many things: transformation, metamorphosis, falsity, betrayal. Tara calls it an education.

Education is not merely a way out of personal suffering — it is a gateway that connects us to a broader world and a higher state of mind. What traps us is never the external environment, but our own inner limitations; and no one but ourselves can free our minds. It is not our clothes or outward appearance that make us unique and distinctive. Instead, it is the light behind our eyes, the quiet determination in our bearing — a lingering hope, a firm belief, an unshakable conviction that life is never fixed, but always open to being reshaped and redefined.

That’s all for our speech. Thank you!
